Don’t you just like the idea of a self-sustaining cell phone, which doesn’t need to be recharged through an electrical output, but rather recharges itself when being used? Such ideas might seem preposterous, but surely, Arman Ahnood thinks otherwise. Literally, Arman Ahnood is a researcher at the London Centre for Nanotechnology, and he is developing a prototype which includes solar cells on the display, which are able to capture waster energy emitted from OLEDs.
Naturally, the solar cells would grab the light emitted from the OLEDs, can funnel the energy back into the cell phone. Ahnood added that his prototype now runs a 11 percent efficiency, which its peak performance at 18 percent. At present time, Ahnood’s prototype is able to generate 5 miliwatts of power from a 3.7 inch screen, which is hardly sustainable for the phone at the moment. Ahnood also added that only 36 percent of the light is projected outwards, which also suggests that devices could in fact save more energy through dimmer more energy efficient displays.
